ham 馃崠 & cheese 馃 milk toast 馃崬

There are a lot of ways of combining cheese, ham and bread either as a hot or cold dish. Their flavors combine so well together and even better to add an extra seasoning of pepper, mustard or cream white sauce. Some common dishes that I could think of are and in my own-experienced way of describing are:

  • Croque Monsieur: a french style grilled sandwich topped with thick white sauce. The melty looking are always so appealing.
  • Ham & cheese Benedict: the classic English muffin topped with a thick-cut ham, a slice of cheese, a poached egg, and the delicious hollandaise sauce.
  • Ham & cheese Croissant: a classic flavor of savory croissant, either folded into an original croissant or rolled and baked together with the buttery dough.
  • Ham & cheese Chelsea buns: tray-baked small buns swirled with ham and cheese. They are the savory cinnamon buns-like buns, I usually describe.
  • Hot grilled cheese sandwich: an irresistible classic American-style grilled sandwich, with the crispiness on the outside of the sandwich with thick layer of butter spread and the melted gluey cheese with a slice of savory ham inside.

Here let me introduce one of our favorite ham, cheese and bread combination: The ham and cheese milk toast. The origin of this flavored toast is unknown, however, it's quite popular in the bakeries back in Taiwan.

This is my third time making this ham and cheese toast and Alex loves them 馃槏. The difficult part of shaping this swirled toast is when doing the braids, the ham and cheese would fall apart. I have to hold them tight and try to let them stay on the dough. Before they go into the oven, I would top them with shredded cheese mix which would become a thin layer of crunchy cheese, like a protection I would say!

In the end, I wonder how differently do this "Ham & cheese milk toast" taste comparing to "A piece of white milk toast topped with a piece of cheese and a slice of ham"? And Alex said... hmmm, I think they are the same 馃槀.

  1. Ham, cheese and bread are definitely one of the most heavenly combinations! Although it is hard to tell which triumphs the other, I dare say there is a difference the all-into-one toast and the later-pieced-together bread. The latter provides enjoyment of placing lost puzzles into their own place ( I do believe these ingredients are born to be united); whereas the
toast boasts the beauty of pure unity ( in a philosophical way) and displays colorful swirls that are also a feast to the eyes.
